JUBAIL: Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Company has awarded a contract to Jacobs Engineering of the US to conduct initial engineering studies to build an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) project in Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia.
The project will have a production capacity of 35,000 tonnes per year (tpy), and will be established on the company’s site in Jubail.
The project is expected to use a technology developed by Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic), and will be fed by ethylene sourced from Kayan’s olefins plant. UHMWPE is used in several industrial applications including batteries, industrial fibres and other applications.
Saudi Kayan, one of the largest complexes of its type in the world, is a Sabic affiliate. It started commercial production last year, producing specialised chemicals which supply other downstream industries in Saudi Arabia.
The plant also produces ethylene, propylene, polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene glycol, natural detergent alcohol, bisphenol-A, acetone and other products.
